The Mum Project
Share
In recent years, heirloom mums have grown wildly popular—and for good reason. These stunning flowers are not only breathtaking but also boast exceptional growing habits and an incredible vase life. Over the past three years, we've been diving deep into these beauties, learning everything we can to determine which varieties thrive best for us.
What We Look For in Heirloom Mums
When selecting mums for the farm, there are several key criteria we evaluate:
- Winter Hardiness: Can I keep them alive through the winter?
- Propagation Success: How well do the cuttings take root?
- Stem Quality: Do they produce long, sturdy stems suitable for arrangements?
- Aesthetic Appeal: Are they crowd-pleasers?
- Stem Yield: How many blooms can I reliably expect per plant?
Expanding Our Collection
This year, we expanded our mum collection significantly and began experimenting with growing "mum mothers" in crates. After trialing around 30 varieties, we’ve identified 10 must-have heirloom mums for the farm. Here’s our list of top performers:
- Homecoming - Early bloomer
- Annie Girl - Mid bloomer
- Bronze Fleece - Early bloomer
- Pink Fleece - Early bloomer
- Crimson Tide - Late bloomer
- Judith Baker - Mid bloomer
- Kokka Munmi - Mid bloomer
- Oberlin - Mid bloomer
- Seaton's Coffee - Late bloomer
- Fall Charm - Early bloomer
While these varieties have earned a spot in our lineup, we're still trialing a more that may make the cut in the future. There's so many more gorgeous varieties I'm eager to get my hands on!!
